Guyana’s Ministry of Education says allegations of sexual abuse involving a teacher at a secondary school in Georgetown are under full investigation.

In a statement, the ministry said it was informed on March 13 of allegations of a sexual nature made by students against a teacher at the institution.

The accused teacher was immediately placed on administrative leave the same day, in keeping with established procedures.

The ministry said its Welfare Department met with parents of the affected students between March 13 and 17 and issued referral letters to the Childcare and Protection Agency.

It added that each affected student is required to undergo a forensic interview conducted by the agency, with one interview completed so far.

The ministry also rejected claims circulating on social media that there had been delays in the investigative process.

“There has been no delay in the investigative process,” the ministry said, adding that all established procedures are being followed.

Officials said the welfare and protection of students remains a priority as the investigation continues.
