The Government of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines has established a National Cost-of-Living Task Force (NCLTF) in a proactive move to address rising global economic pressures affecting energy, food, and logistics costs.
The initiative, approved by the Cabinet on 25 March 2026, is intended to respond to what officials describe as systemic external shocks, including the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which has contributed to rising oil prices and increased shipping risk premiums. Brent Crude oil has climbed to approximately $110 per barrel, intensifying inflationary pressures across import-dependent economies.
According to the government, the task force marks a shift from a reactive approach to a coordinated national strategy aimed at mitigating the impact of these developments on households and businesses.
The National Cost-of-Living Task Force adopts a whole-of-nation framework, bringing together policy, technical, and private sector stakeholders. It is chaired by the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning and includes representation from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Agriculture, Blue Economy, and Tourism.
Key operational partners include labour unions, as well as technical agencies such as the Customs department, the Port Authority, and Argyle International Airport. Private sector stakeholders, including the Chamber of Industry and Commerce, VINLEC, and major importers, are also part of the structure.
Officials say the task force will focus on both immediate relief measures and longer-term structural reforms. Among its priorities is advising on targeted tax relief to help cushion the impact of rising costs linked to global geopolitical tensions.
On the supply side, the task force is expected to work with regional partners through CARICOM to identify alternative sourcing options, including imports from countries such as Guyana and Brazil, with the aim of reducing regional food costs and improving supply chain resilience.
Energy cooperation and the expansion of renewable energy projects are also expected to form part of the group’s longer-term strategy to help reduce utility costs and strengthen energy security.
The government says the establishment of the task force is intended to protect vulnerable citizens from the effects of global volatility while strengthening the country’s economic resilience through coordinated, multi-sector action.
