A 51-year-old lawyer was arrested in Suriname after pointing a gun at a police officer during a dispute.
In a statement, the Suriname Police Force said preliminary investigations indicate that the lawyer was at the Keizerstraat Police Station on January 2 to provide legal assistance to a detainee when a verbal dispute with a police officer escalated.
During the altercation, the lawyer allegedly drew his firearm and aimed it at the officer.
An assistant prosecutor at the scene immediately detained the lawyer on suspicion of threat under Article 345 of the Criminal Code, the police said.
Authorities confiscated his firearm, which was loaded with live ammunition and legally authorised.
The Capital Crimes Division is continuing investigations into the matter.
