PROVIDENCIALES, Turks and Caicos Islands — Border security authorities in the Turks and Caicos Islands have intercepted vessels carrying 300 irregular migrants over the past two days.

On September 8, authorities intercepted a vessel carrying 93 migrants.

The operation followed another interception on September 7, when 207 migrants were detained.
Following the September 7 incident, Acting Commissioner of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force (RTCIPF), Kendall Grant, highlighted the risks associated with irregular maritime migration and the dangerous journeys undertaken by vulnerable people, including children.

“This incident highlights the significant risks associated with irregular maritime migration and the dangerous journeys undertaken by vulnerable individuals, including children,” Grant said.

He said the RTCIPF remains committed to protecting the territory’s borders while ensuring that every operation is conducted with due regard for the safety, dignity and welfare of those involved.

Grant also commended the officers and other agencies involved for their swift and professional response, saying their actions prevented what could have been a serious incident.

All of the migrants intercepted during the two operations were handed over to immigration authorities for further processing.
