The Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis said it has received official confirmation from the United States regarding a temporary pause in the issuance of immigrant visas to nationals of several countries, including Saint Kitts and Nevis.
In a statement, the government said the clarification followed engagement with the United States Embassy in Barbados, which is responsible for the Eastern Caribbean islands.
The government said based on the information received, the directive applies only to immigrant visas, which relate to long-term residency in the United States.
Non-immigrant visas, including tourist, business, student and short-term travel visas, are not affected by the measure and continue to be processed.
“US authorities have indicated that immigrant visa applications will continue to be accepted and processed; however, all such applications are currently being refused under Section 221(g) of US immigration law. This is a procedural refusal issued where additional information or guidance is required to complete adjudication,” the statement said.
“These refusals are administrative in nature and will be applied with further guidance from US authorities on enhanced vetting and screening procedures, including considerations related to public charge assessments.”
The government noted that the directive does not apply to dual nationals travelling on passports from countries not included on the affected list.
Exceptions may also apply on a case-by-case basis.
While acknowledging the right of the United States to implement national security measures, the government said it remains committed to protecting the interests of its citizens. Officials said they will continue to monitor developments, maintain engagement with US authorities and update the public as more information becomes available.
Citizens were encouraged to remain guided by official government communications for accurate updates on the matter.
