West Indies produced a strong all-round performance to defeat England by 30 runs in their Group C clash  of the T20 World Cup at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

England captain Harry Brook won the toss and elected to field first, but West Indies recovered from an early setback to post 196/6 from their 20 overs.

Openers Shai Hope and Brandon King were both dismissed inside the first two overs, placing immediate pressure on the batting side.

However, the middle order responded by sharing the scoring responsibility to rebuild the innings.

Shimron Hetmyer scored 23 while Roston Chase contributed 34 as the pair added 47 runs from 28 balls to steady the innings and guide West Indies to 55/3 at the end of the powerplay.

England continued to strike at regular intervals, but West Indies countered with aggressive stroke play.

Sherfane Rutherford anchored the late surge after settling at the crease, launching five sixes and two fours to reach a half-century.

He remained unbeaten on 76, striking seven sixes and two fours, and formed key partnerships including 51 runs for the fifth wicket with Rovman Powell and 61 runs for the sixth wicket with Jason Holder.

Holder then accelerated the scoring during the closing stages, blasting three sixes off Sam Curran in the 17th over.

His quickfire 33 from 17 balls helped West Indies collect 54 runs in the final four overs.

For England, Jofra Archer and Curran made early breakthroughs, while Adil Rashid delivered the standout bowling performance with figures of 2/1 from his four overs.

Jamie Overton also picked up two wickets for 33 runs.

In reply, England began aggressively through Phil Salt, who struck 24 runs in Holder’s second over. However, Romario Shepherd, who recorded a hat-trick in the previous game, made an immediate impact by dismissing Salt, with Rutherford taking the catch.

Jacob Bethell then joined Jos Buttler at the crease and continued his strong form with a series of boundaries. England posted 67/1 in the powerplay, the second-highest powerplay score of the tournament.

West Indies regained control in the middle overs as Chase and Gudakesh Motie removed Buttler and Tom Banton in successive overs. Brook then arrived at the crease to support Bethell, but Motie’s spin halted England’s momentum as he finished with figures of 3/33.

Chase added further pressure by trapping Will Jacks leg before wicket to leave England struggling at 134/6.

Although Curran attempted to revive the chase, wickets continued to fall at the other end.

West Indies also produced strong fielding efforts, including two run outs, to seal victory.

The regional team are now atop the group with four points.

They will play Nepal on February 15 at the same venue.
