West Indies crashed to their second defeat of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup on Sunday, losing by five wickets to India in a crucial clash in Kolkata.
The loss at Eden Gardens dealt a major blow to West Indies’ campaign, as India secured a semi-final berth with the victory.
Batting first on a surface favourable to stroke play, West Indies posted 195/4 despite a brief middle-order wobble.
Their depth with the bat allowed them to recover and set what appeared to be a competitive target.
However, India made light work of the chase, reaching 199/5 in 19.2 overs.
Sanju Samson proved the difference, producing an unbeaten 97 from 50 balls in one of the standout innings of the tournament.
His knock, which included 12 fours and four sixes, steered India through periods of pressure and ensured the hosts maintained control of the pursuit.
West Indies struck twice in the powerplay, reducing India to 53/2, but were unable to sustain the pressure.
Partnerships of 58 runs with Suryakumar Yadav and 42 with Tilak Varma shifted the momentum firmly in India’s favour.
Samson sealed the result by lofting the winning runs over mid-on, confirming West Indies’ second setback of the competition.
India will now face England cricket team in the semi-finals in Mumbai on Thursday.
