Trinidad and Tobago’s Commissioner of Police Allister Guevarro says recent violent incidents recorded during Carnival Monday are believed to be linked to ongoing gang activity rather than the festivities themselves.

Speaking on policing efforts, Guevarro confirmed that two people were wounded in a shooting and one person was killed in a stabbing during celebrations. He said preliminary reports suggested the incidents were likely connected to retaliatory gang violence.

“At this time, we have no information that these incidents are carnival-related. Initial reports indicate that they are more likely spillover from ongoing gang-related, retaliatory violence,” he said in an audio statement to the media following the incidents.

Guevarro said the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) will continue to pursue leads and maintain operational pressure on individuals and groups responsible for violent crimes.

The commissioner also raised concern about an increase in reports involving intoxicated teenagers during the Carnival period. He urged parents and guardians to pay closer attention to their children as celebrations continue.

“We have seen an increase in reports of teenagers being heavily intoxicated, some brought to police stations unconscious, others behaving disorderly, and in one instance, two of them locked themselves in a portable toilet and began to cry,” Guevarro said.

“This is deeply concerning, as Carnival is a time of celebration, but our young people must be protected, supervised, and guided,” he added.

Guevarro noted that police have maintained a strong and visible presence throughout major events, including Panorama Finals, Kiddies Carnival and Dimanche Gras, all of which he said were largely supported by responsible public behaviour. 

He added that J’Ouvert celebrations also saw large crowds enjoying the festivities safely.

As celebrations continue, Guevarro urged motorists to exercise caution on the nation’s roads, noting that two road fatalities have already been recorded.

“These tragedies are preventable, and I am appealing to all drivers, again, slow down, stay alert, and do not drink and drive,” he said.

Guevarro said the police service remains fully mobilised to ensure public safety as festivities continue, particularly with Monday night events and the Parade of the Bands still to come.

He also thanked the public for their cooperation so far and encouraged continued partnership with law enforcement to ensure the Carnival season remains safe and enjoyable for all.
