Donald Trump

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali are set to meet with US President Donald Trump on March 7 in Miami.

The meeting was secured following bilateral discussions with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on February 25 on the sidelines of the 50th Caribbean Community (Caribbean Community) Heads of Government meeting in St Kitts and Nevis.

Speaking to reporters after the talks, Ali said the March 7 meeting would focus on security matters and regional challenges.

“It’s a meeting dealing with security matters, it’s dealing with some of the challenges in the region, and to see how we can coordinate better in relation to those challenges,” Ali said.

Persad-Bissessar said discussions with Rubio covered Haiti, Cuba and engagements with Venezuela.

“we talked about Haiti. We talked about Cuba, of course. We talked about engagements with Venezuela on the way forward.”

“And he committed that on the 7th, when we meet President Trump, more details will be shared on several of the things that I raised with him today.”

Other Latin American countries are reportedly expected to participate in the Miami engagement.

There has been no confirmation that additional Caribbean leaders will attend.

Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana, the Caribbean’s largest petrochemical producers, have developed closer relations with the US.

Since returning to office in April 2025 after nearly a decade out of power, Persad-Bissessar signalled a shift in Trinidad and Tobago’s foreign policy — moving away from non-alignment and what was seen as fence-straddling on Venezuela and Cuba, to openly criticising the leadership of both countries.

Through strengthened ties with Washington, Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana were among a small group of Caribbean states not added to a list of countries whose nationals face immigrant visa restrictions under the Trump administration.
