ST GEORGE’S, Grenada — Caribbean leaders have congratulated Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell after his National Democratic Congress (NDC) secured a second consecutive term in office with a sweeping victory in the November 5 general election.

The NDC won 14 of the 15 seats in the House of Representatives.

Saint Lucia’s Prime Minister and Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Chairman Philip Pierre was among those extending congratulations, describing the result as an expression of trust that carried both honour and responsibility.

“My brother, as you continue this journey of service, remain steadfast in putting people first,” Pierre said.

“I wish you wisdom, strength and God’s continued guidance as you lead Grenada forward. You can count on my friendship and Saint Lucia’s continued partnership as we work together for the advancement of our people and our Caribbean region.”

Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar also congratulated Mitchell, saying her country looked forward to maintaining strong relations with Grenada under his leadership.

“As close neighbours, valued friends and CARICOM brothers, we look forward to further strengthening our bilateral relationship, deepening regional cooperation and advancing our shared interests for the benefit of our citizens,” she wrote in a congratulatory post.

Persad-Bissessar also praised Grenadians for exercising their democratic right and choosing their government, adding that Mitchell’s victory reflected the confidence and trust they placed in his administration.

Guyana’s President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali described the result as a vote of confidence in Mitchell’s leadership and a mandate for continuity in his policies and vision for Grenada.

“I look forward, during his new term, to expanding our close collaboration and working together to advance regional integration,” Ali said.

Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley also congratulated Mitchell, noting that an overwhelming electoral mandate brought with it a responsibility to serve all citizens.

“An overwhelming mandate is a powerful expression of trust. It brings with it the profound responsibility of honouring that trust through service to every citizen and steady work to fulfil the hopes of the people,” she said.

Mottley said Barbados and Grenada shared a longstanding friendship and commitment to Caribbean development, and expressed her intention to continue strengthening cooperation between the two countries.
