The government of Trinidad and Tobago has expressed support for a joint United States and Israeli military operation in Iran that killed the country’s long-standing supreme leader, Ali Khamenei.
The early-morning offensive, dubbed Operation Epic Fury by the US, aimed to curb Tehran’s weapons capabilities, including its nuclear programme and ballistic missile development.
Iranian state media confirmed Khamenei’s death, and reports suggest several senior military officials were killed alongside him.
The strikes have reportedly caused significant civilian casualties. In the southern city of Minab, an attack on a girls’ school is said to have killed dozens of students amid the bombardment.
The operation represents the most significant direct military action against Iran in decades, with the stated objective of neutralising imminent threats posed by its military programmes.
In a statement, Trinidad and Tobago’s Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs said it supported “the continued actions of the United States of America aimed at preventing oppressive regimes from acquiring nuclear weapons capabilities that would jeopardise international peace and security.”
The ministry expressed sympathy for all loss of life and reaffirmed its support for peaceful existence for all people.
The ministry also pledged solidarity with Gulf states affected by the conflict, including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Qatar, condemning “in the strongest possible terms any acts of aggression that threaten their sovereignty, security, and stability.”
Trinidad and Tobago nationals in the Middle East are urged to shelter in place, follow local authority guidance and avoid travel to the region.
Citizens are encouraged to register with the ministry’s Registration System for Nationals Abroad and ensure travel documents are valid.
The ministry said it would continue to monitor the situation closely and engage with international partners as appropriate, reiterating its commitment to the safety and well-being of Trinidad and Tobago citizens at home and abroad.
