A Trinidadian mini-bus driver has been charged after allegedly assaulting three licensing officers during an incident that was captured on video and widely circulated on social media.

The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) said Rondell Bowen appeared before Master Rehanna Hosein at the Tunapuna High Court, where he pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Bowen was granted bail in the sum of $75,000 with surety.

Police allege that around 10 am on March 9, Motor Vehicle Officers Kairron Hayter, Keston Price and Andy Saroop were assaulted while performing their duties along the Southern Main Road in Curepe.

Video footage of the incident later circulated on social media. In one video, Bowen is seen in a confrontation with one of the officers, during which the officer also threw an object in his direction.

Bowen claimed that one of the officers had taken the keys to his bus after he was pulled aside shortly after dropping off a passenger in a manner the officer deemed inappropriate.

He protested and engaged in a heated exchange with the officers. In another clip, Bowen is seen chasing the officers with an object in his hand as they drove away in a pick-up truck.

Police said the matter was reported and an investigation was immediately launched.

The investigation was conducted by Acting Corporal Williams, who visited the scene, recorded statements from the victims and witnesses, and gathered evidence related to the incident.

Medical reports were also collected for both the officers and Bowen.

Following the completion of the investigation, a file was submitted and instructions were received to charge Bowen with common assault and assault on a peace officer.
