Antigua and Barbuda was shaken by a 6.5 magnitude earthquake early on May 16, with tremors felt across several neighbouring islands.
According to the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre (UWI-SRC), the quake struck at 10:50 am local time approximately 80 kilometres northeast of St John’s.
The seismic event occurred at a depth of 31 kilometres.
The tremor was also felt in nearby Montserrat and Guadeloupe.
In an advisory following the quake, the UWI-SRC warned that aftershocks are likely.
“We can expect aftershocks after the event off Antigua this morning. Some of these maybe magnitude 3.5 and above and likely to be felt. Here is a quick safety video on what to do before, during and after. Remember do not panic, stay calm, Drop, Cover and Hold On. Do not run outside while the shaking is happening. Earthquakes can happen at anytime, we must be prepared,” the agency said.
There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
