A suspended officer of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) has been arrested in connection with allegations of kidnapping and sexual offences involving a 20-year-old woman.
According to police, the incident reportedly occurred on June 3 when the woman was allegedly removed from a vehicle by a man who identified himself as a police officer and showed what appeared to be a TTPS identification badge.
The victim told police she was taken to an unknown location, where she was allegedly sexually assaulted.
A report was made at the Chaguanas Police Station, prompting an investigation into the allegations.
The suspect, a 39-year-old police constable who is currently under suspension, was arrested on June 20 under a seven-day detention order.
Following advice from Director of Public Prosecutions Roger Gaspard SC, the officer is expected to face charges including grievous sexual assault, attempted grievous sexual assault, serious indecency and kidnapping.
He is expected to appear before a Master of the High Court this week.
The investigation was led by senior TTPS officials and involved officers from several units.
The TTPS said the matter reinforces its commitment to investigating allegations of misconduct regardless of a person’s position or profession.
“No individual is above the law,” the police service said, adding that where sufficient evidence exists, criminal charges will be pursued.
