CASTRIES, Saint Lucia — Dr Janet Caroo, Managing Director of UWItv, has been appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) and Head of the Regional Integration Unit of the Government of Saint Lucia.

The appointment took effect on September 1, 2026.

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) congratulated Caroo on the appointment, describing it as a significant new chapter in her career of regional service and a recognition of her leadership, Caribbean experience and commitment to regional development, cooperation and integration.

During her time as Managing Director of UWItv, Caroo advanced The UWI’s regional mandate through strategic communication and public engagement while promoting Caribbean perspectives.

The university said she connected its expertise and scholarship with communities across the region and highlighted the role of media in fostering informed dialogue on Caribbean issues.

In her new role, Caroo will support Saint Lucia’s engagement with CARICOM and the OECS, with responsibilities involving regional priorities including cooperation, mobility, trade, investment, innovation and stronger people-to-people connections.

The UWI Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, and the wider university community also congratulated Caroo on the appointment.

“Dr Caroo’s appointment reflects the value of Caribbean leadership, institutional experience and a deep understanding of the region,” Beckles said.

He said The UWI was proud of the impact Caroo made through UWItv, particularly in amplifying Caribbean perspectives and strengthening the university’s connection with the people it serves.

“We are equally pleased to see her carry that experience into this important diplomatic assignment on behalf of Saint Lucia and the wider Caribbean,” he said.

The UWI said it wishes Caroo success in her new role and looks forward to her continued contributions to Saint Lucia and the wider Caribbean.
