BUDAPEST, Hungary — Dominican Republic’s Marileidy Paulino has become the first Caribbean athlete to win gold at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship.

The reigning Olympic champion won the women’s 400 metres in Budapest on September 12, clocking 49.07 seconds.

Running in lane seven, Paulino made her usual slow start and remained at the back of the field through the opening 200 metres.

She began to close the gap during the third 100 metres, moving within striking distance of the Netherlands’ Lieke Klaver.

Paulino then produced her trademark finish in the home straight, passing Klaver and Norway’s Henriette Jæger, who had led for much of the race.

Jæger finished second in 49.28 seconds, while Jamaica’s Nickisha Pryce took bronze in 49.56 seconds.

Klaver finished fourth in 49.91 seconds.
