ROSEAU, Dominica — Dominica’s geothermal energy project has won two awards at the 2026 Caribbean Renewable Energy Forum (CREF), while Energy Minister Dr Vince Henderson received an industry leadership honour.
The project was recognised as Best Caribbean Energy Project and Best Financing Programme at the forum, held in Panama City, Panama, from October 14–16.
Henderson received the Caribbean Energy Leadership MVP Industry Award.
The recognition comes as Dominica’s 10-megawatt geothermal power plant at Laudat, in the Roseau Valley, begins supplying electricity to the national grid.
The facility entered commercial operation in July 2026 after completing the required testing.
The financing award recognises the investment strategy and partnerships behind the project, while Henderson’s leadership award acknowledges his role in advancing its development, financing and delivery.
“For a small country like Dominica, bringing a geothermal project of this scale into operation required conviction, difficult decisions and the determination to keep going through years of technical and financial challenges. These awards recognise that effort and affirm that Dominica can deliver major projects with regional significance.
“I am especially proud that our geothermal resources are now generating electricity for our people, giving us greater control over our energy future and a stronger foundation for economic development,” Henderson said.
He credited Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, project teams and development partners for helping bring the project to fruition.
“This achievement belongs to the people of Dominica. It reflects the vision and support of Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, the dedication of our project teams and the confidence of partners who worked with us to make it possible. I am honoured to receive the leadership award, and I share that recognition with everyone who contributed to this national undertaking.
“Our responsibility now is to build on this investment so that greater energy independence translates into more affordable electricity, stronger businesses and better opportunities for our people,” the minister added.
