Arrest

Dominican Republic anti-narcotics agents have struck a blow against a contraband ring operating at Las Américas International Airport with the arrest of five airport workers.

The National Directorate of Drug Control (DNCD) said its investigation stemmed from a foiled attempt to smuggle just over eight kilogrammes of cocaine from the airport to Spain on August 15, 2025.

The cocaine was discovered during an inspection of cargo warehouses used to load shipments bound for Europe. Anti-narcotics agents were alerted after a sniffer dog detected the presence of drugs inside a trash bin, where the packages had been concealed.

In a statement on December 30, the DNCD said four people — Julio César Guzmán Torres, Rafael González Núñez, Rafelito García Méndez and Ángela Orquídea Feliz Félix — were arrested in connection with the case.

A day later, the agency announced the arrest of a fifth suspect, Nefry González Rivas.

Authorities said all five were employees of airlines or companies that provide services at the airport.

According to the DNCD, Guzmán Torres, González Núñez, García Méndez and Feliz Félix were “commissioned to allow the entry of the packages onto an aircraft” scheduled to travel to Madrid, Spain.

González Rivas was described by investigators as one of the main leaders of the trafficking structure operating at the airport.

The DNCD said investigations are continuing and that further arrests are possible as authorities pursue additional leads.
