An 18-year-old man is St Kitts and Nevis’ first homicide victim for 2026.

Police said Kaden Hanley of Shadwell Estate died after being stabbed in the chest on January 2 in the vicinity of Independence Square in Basseterre during last lap festivities.

The incident occurred between 8.30pm and 9pm. 

Officers from the Special Services Unit responded and transported Hanley to the Joseph N France General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Following the incident, the St Kitts Nevis National Carnival Committee (SKNNCC) took a decision to cancel all events scheduled January 3, which is the final night Sugar Mas 54 revellry, in the Bacchanal District at Bank Street, Basseterre.

SKNNCC Chair Shannon Hawley apologised to stakeholders and part goes but said “safety of all is paramount.

She also sent condolences to Hanley family.
