Stanley Kendrick John, KC, has been officially installed as the Governor General of St Vincent and the Grenadines. He took his Oaths of Allegiance and Office on January 6 at Government House, becoming the country’s eighth Governor General.

John is no stranger to public life, bringing a distinguished career in public service. He served as a Government Senator in 1983, an Opposition Senator from 1984 to 1989, and as Parliamentary Representative for East St George in 1998. In addition, he is a highly respected lawyer, having been appointed Queen’s Counsel by the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court in February 2014.

He succeeds Dame Susan Dougan, who is retiring after more than six years in office. As the representative of King Charles III, John used his first speech to urge the government to adhere to the principles enshrined in the nation’s constitution.

“While there is a need and call for change, until that is done, the document and the words within it must be upheld,” he said. John added that the recent election results and the “impressive mandate” given to the new government present an opportunity for elected and appointed parliamentarians to work in the best interests of the citizens.

In her final act as Governor General, Dougan offered words of advice to John, urging him to lead with compassion and keep the people of St Vincent and the Grenadines at the forefront of his mind.

“Service to country calls for patience, humility, good judgment, and love for the common man, and I know you are very cognizant of that,” she said. “I also know that you have a thorough understanding of the many complex challenges facing our nation today, and that you will bring your expertise and vast experience to bear, giving clear direction wherever and whenever it is needed.”

Dougan, the country’s first female Governor General, expressed gratitude for her time in office, which coincided with significant local and international challenges, including the eruption of La Soufrière volcano, the coronavirus pandemic, and the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.

Prime Minister Dr Godwin Friday also thanked Dougan for her contributions and steady leadership.

“Your Excellency, your public service has been enduring and outstanding,” he said. He added that St Vincent and the Grenadines is fortunate to have a new leader “whose love for country knows no bounds,” and expressed confidence that John will be exemplary in his service as head of state.

Prime Minister Friday emphasised that the nation is fortunate to have a Governor General deeply committed to public service and whose dedication to the country is unwavering.
