The Guyana Police Force (GPF) has launched an investigation into the assault of vlogger Antony D’Oliveira.

Police announced the probe on January 6 after video clips showing a man slapping D’Oliveira went viral on social media. 

The footage, posted by D’Oliveira on his YouTube channel under the title “I Was Assaulted In Georgetown, Guyana ”, shows the host of the Jumps Travel Documentary walking into a market while filming.

In the video, D’Oliveira walked by two men standing at the entrance who question him about why he is recording. As he walks away, one of the men strikes him in the back of the neck while shouting expletives.

In a statement, the GPF said acts of violence are unacceptable and violate both Guyana’s laws and the societal values of safety, hospitality, and respect.

“Investigators are actively reviewing the video footage, conducting enquiries and pursuing all available leads with the aim of identifying and apprehending the individual responsible, in accordance with the law,” the police said.

The GPF expressed concern for D’Oliveira and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that Guyana remains a safe and welcoming destination for all visitors and residents. 

Authorities are urging anyone with information that could help identify the men involved to come forward.

The Ministry of Tourism, Industry, and Commerce, along with the Guyana Tourism Authority, also condemned the attack, calling it “wholly unacceptable” and contrary to the values for which Guyana and its people are known.

Both organisations stressed that the safety and well-being of visitors and residents remain top priorities. They confirmed they will continue working closely with law enforcement, tourism stakeholders, and local communities to maintain a secure environment.

The ministry and tourism authority expressed concern for D’Oliveira and called for a thorough investigation to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
