Jamaica international midfielder Jon Russell has joined Mansfield Town on loan from Barnsley until the end of the season.

Russell has scored five goals in 17 appearances for the Jamaica national team. 

The 25-year-old began his career at Chelsea before moving on loan to Accrington Stanley in October 2020, where he made 25 appearances and scored twice.

He left Chelsea to join Huddersfield Town in 2021 and spent one-and-a-half seasons at Accu Stadium before signing for Barnsley in January 2023 for an undisclosed fee.

During his time with Barnsley, Russell earned his first call-up to the Jamaica national team. He made his senior international debut in March 2023, coming off the bench against Mexico in a CONCACAF Nations League match.

Speaking after completing the move to Mansfield Town, Russell said he was attracted by the club’s interest in him.

“It’s perfect timing, [I was impressed with] how keen they [the club] were to get me.

“I want to be somewhere where the club values me so it was a ‘no-brainer’ to come here.

“You’ll see my heart and hunger to win tackles, make the box, score goals and make things happen.

“I want to encourage the other players, be one of the leaders and be a player to help the team win. That’s what I want to do.
