Yung Bredda is returning to calypso with a new release that places message and social responsibility at the forefront.
His latest song, The Messenger, marks a deliberate shift from the high-energy performances that have defined much of his career to conscious storytelling, using calypso as a platform to address youth empowerment, respect for elders, resilience and self-belief.
The song, described as a conscious calypso, draws from lived experience and focuses heavily on themes of guidance, purpose and overcoming circumstance.
A statement announcing the release said the track positions Yung Bredda, whose real name is Akhenaton Lewis, as a narrator for those navigating life from the margins.
Yung Bredda made his calypso debut in 2025 with We Rise, earning a spot in the Calypso Fiesta at Skinner Park, San Fernando, and advancing to the Calypso Monarch final, where he placed third.
While he hopes to build on that success, the artiste said his main focus this season is using the calypso stage to inspire.
“I am excited to return to the Calypso stage this year,” Yung Bredda said. “This is a space where I can express a more serious side of myself and speak directly to the youth using my own experiences.”
“The Messenger is about reminding people, especially the youth, that what you come from does not limit where you can go. It is about guidance, faith and believing in your journey, even when others doubt you,” he added.
The project is supported by his manager and producer Jesse John of Optimus Productions, along with DJ Jelani Hepburn, also known as DJ Hottie.
“The release marks a significant moment in Yung Bredda’s career, reaffirming his connection to calypso and positioning him among a new generation of artistes helping to carry the genre forward,” John said. “As Carnival 2026 approaches, The Messenger stands as a reminder that calypso remains a powerful vehicle for storytelling, social commentary and cultural preservation.”
Hepburn also praised the artiste’s versatility.
“It is an absolute pleasure working alongside Yung Bredda and watching his versatility. As his DJ I love being able to switch things up, going from steam to soca and calypso. Yung Bredda is a true talent and inspiration for the youth,” he said.
The Messenger was written by Leeanna Williams, Kellon “Melmin” Daniel and Ato Williams, and produced by Ato Williams of 5IVE Line Productions.
Digital recording, mixing and additional production were handled by Carl “Beaver” Henderson.
Background vocals were provided by Akeita Pierre Williams, with guitars by Kyle Peters, bass by Rodney Alexander, live drums by Sheldon Raymond “Timbales Guy,” saxophone by Brandon Christopher, trumpet by John Wayne Thomas and trombone by Yohance Dickson.
The song is now available on all major streaming platforms.
