The Bahamian Government is urging nationals in Minnesota, including students and residents in Minneapolis, to exercise extreme caution following what it described as an “elevated climate” in the area.

In a safety advisory issued this week, the Bahamas Embassy Consular Annex said Bahamians residing in or travelling through Minnesota should remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary travel and be mindful of their surroundings.

The advisory comes after Alex Pretti, was shot and killed by a federal immigration agent during protests on January 24. Pretti,37, was the second American shot by federal agents in Minnesota this month.

The notice emphasised that personal safety should be the highest priority and advised nationals to carry valid government-issued identification at all times.

The advisory also warned nationals not to engage with individuals, confront situations or intervene in any incidents, and to stay away from areas where there is visible tension or unrest.

Bahamian students and other nationals in Minnesota are encouraged to register with the Consular Annex so that they can be contacted if needed, the advisory said.

“If you require assistance or are faced with an emergency, please contact the Consular Annex immediately,” the statement added, providing emergency contact numbers.

The Consular Annex said it remains available to offer guidance and assistance to Bahamian nationals in the region.
