Trinidad and Tobago and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have signed a new agreement aimed at strengthening investment relations between the two countries.

The agreement, signed on February 3, 2026, establishes a framework for the promotion and reciprocal protection of investments between both nations.

Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs Sean Sobers signed on behalf of Trinidad and Tobago, while UAE Minister of State for Financial Affairs Mohamed bin Hadi Al Hussaini signed on behalf of his country.

The signing took place on the margins of the World Governments Summit in Dubai.

According to the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, the agreement is intended to support and protect new investments by providing guidelines for investor conduct and safeguarding the rights of both investors and host states.

The arrangement also includes provisions for fair and equitable treatment, protection against expropriation, and mechanisms to resolve investment disputes.

Officials said the agreement forms part of Trinidad and Tobago’s broader strategy to expand diplomatic and economic partnerships globally.

The ministry noted that the initiative builds on diplomatic engagement led by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, who met with UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan during the United Nations General Assembly in New York in September 2025.

The World Governments Summit, where the agreement was signed, is an international platform focused on government collaboration and knowledge sharing.

Established in 2013, the summit brings together governments, international organisations, private sector leaders, and policy experts to discuss solutions to global challenges.

The 2026 summit is being held under the theme “Shaping Future Governments” and focuses on areas including global governance, societal development, economic opportunities, urban development, and emerging technologies.

Government officials say the new agreement is expected to encourage increased investor confidence and strengthen economic cooperation between Trinidad and Tobago and the UAE.
