Voters across Barbados are heading to the polls today as Prime Minister Mia Mottley seeks a historic third consecutive term in office.

If successful, Mottley, the country’s first and only female prime minister, would become only the second leader to win three general elections in succession, following Barbados’ founding father Errol Barrow.

Mottley, leader of the Barbados Labour Party (BLP), is contesting the election against opposition leader Ralph Thorne of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP). Polls opened at 6 am and are scheduled to close at 6 pm.

The BLP secured landslide victories in the last two general elections in 2018 and 2022, capturing all 30 seats in the House of Assembly, a first in the country’s history.

Thorne, who was elected to represented the Christ Church South constituency under the BLP banner, crossed the floor in 2024.

Opposition parties have raised concerns about alleged inaccuracies on the electoral register, including missing names, which they said could affect the integrity of the vote. The electoral commission has rejected those claims, maintaining that the process remains legitimate.

Approximately 271,000 voters are eligible to cast ballots in the election, with 96 candidates contesting seats across the island.
