Russia said it will assist its nationals in Cuba amid tensions over aircraft fuel supplies which have disrupted air travel to the island.

In a February 12 statement, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said unprecedented measures by the United States to block energy supplies to Cuba, including aircraft fuel deliveries, have created a difficult situation for Russian airlines Rossiya Airlines and Nordwind Airlines which operate flights to the island.

Russia is one of the biggest source markets for tourists visiting the communist run island.

Zakharova said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia and the Russian Embassy in Havana are maintaining close contact with Cuban authorities, air carriers and tour operators to provide assistance to Russian citizens, primarily tourists, in Cuba.

She said Russia believes external forces attempting to worsen Cuba’s energy crisis and disrupt air services are seeking to provoke discontent among local residents and foreign visitors affected by the disruptions.

Zakharova urged Russian citizens whose return travel has been delayed to remain calm and patient, while also advising those planning visits to Cuba to take into account the current situation and follow recommendations issued by the Ministry of Economic Development of Russia.

According to the statement, Russian diplomats in Havana are working to assist citizens impacted by the situation, which Zakharova attributed to the longstanding United States embargo against Cuba. 

She said the embassy is providing assistance through a hotline, travel updates and the organisation of flights for returning nationals.

Zakharova added that Russian authorities are working with government agencies to address the issue and support affected citizens.
