Arrest

Surinamese police have arrested three men in connection with a suspected cross-border fuel smuggling operation involving neighbouring Guyana.

The Suriname Police Corps said members of its Special Unit Region West acted on a tip-off that a pick-up truck was transporting fuel in South Drain, also known as Zuiddrain, in western Suriname.

According to police, the fuel was believed to have been smuggled into the country shortly before via a so-called “Go Fast” boat from Guyana.

Officers intercepted the vehicle and detained three men aged 40, 38 and 48. Upon inspecting the cargo area, police discovered approximately 310 litres of gasoline and 690 litres of diesel fuel.

Authorities said the colour of the liquids was consistent with fuel typically smuggled in from Guyana.

The three suspects were taken into custody as investigations continue.
