Only a fraction of those detained during Trinidad and Tobago’s 2025 State of Emergency have been formally charged, according to figures disclosed in the Senate on Tuesday.

Minister of Homeland Security Roger Alexander said 153 people were arrested during the SOE, which ran from July 18, 2025 to January 31, 2026, while 29 detainees have since been charged with various offences.

The figures were presented in response to questions from Opposition Senator Vishnu Dhanpaul on the outcomes of the SoE.

Data from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service also showed that 208 Preventive Detention Orders were issued, with one duplication recorded.

Alexander said 20 individuals remain in custody at the Eastern Correctional Rehabilitation Centre on remand, while others have been released.

He noted that the matters involving the 29 charged individuals are still before the courts. No information was given on conviction rates.
