Port of Spain

The governments of the United Kingdom and the United States have issued updated travel advisories for Trinidad and Tobago following the declaration of a nationwide State of Emergency (SoE) aimed at addressing rising gang-related crime.

The SoE, announced on March 3, grants authorities additional powers to combat organised criminal activity, including searches, arrests, and detentions.

Officials stressed that no curfew or restrictions on movement have been imposed, but heightened vigilance is advised.

The UK advisory warns that violent crime, including gang-related shootings, homicides, and armed robberies, remains high.

Visitors are advised to exercise caution in certain areas of Port of Spain, such as east of Charlotte Street, south and west of Piccadilly Street, and north of Independence Square. Other locations highlighted include Carenage, Sea Lots, Belmont, Laventille, Morvant, Beetham, Barataria, Cocorite, and the interior of Queen’s Park Savannah.

While noting that Trinidad and Tobago has no recent history of terrorism, the UK cautioned that attacks cannot be ruled out and urged travellers to follow local guidance and remain alert.

Similarly, the US Department of State advised American citizens to expect an increased police and military presence during the SoE.

The advisory notes that the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service and Defence Force have expanded authority to arrest individuals suspected of criminal activity and search both public and private properties.

Bail provisions for certain offenses have also been suspended.

US officials advised avoiding areas including Laventille, Beetham, Sea Lots, Cocorite, and the interior of Queen’s Park Savannah. After dark, travellers should steer clear of downtown Port of Spain, Fort George, beaches, and Queen’s Park Savannah.

Citizens are urged to carry identification, cooperate with security personnel, and monitor official government updates, as the situation may evolve and emergency measures could be adjusted based on security conditions.
