The Cayman Islands will implement a series of immigration changes from May 1, as authorities move to overhaul the work permit system and streamline application processes.

The Ministry responsible for Caymanian Employment and Immigration said the updated system will go live on that date following weeks of testing and preparation by the Workforce Opportunities and Residency Cayman (WORC) and its technical partners.

Officials said the timeline was set to ensure the system is fully operational before launch, including updated forms, staff training and support services for employers and applicants.

“We are determined to get this right,” said Minister Michael Myles, adding that the changes represent “a significant step forward for work permit administration”.

WORC Director Jeremy Scott said teams are focused on ensuring a smooth transition when the system comes into effect.

“We are committed to delivering a smooth transition for stakeholders. Our teams are focused to ensure that the system is launched and operates as intended,” Scott said,

The reforms are part of amendments to immigration legislation aimed at improving efficiency and clarifying existing practices. Among the changes is a provision allowing some applications for Caymanian status to be assessed under the laws that were in place when they were first submitted.

Authorities will also introduce a framework for expedited processing fees for certain applications, including temporary work permits.

Another key amendment formalises the status of people born in the Cayman Islands between January 1, 1969 and March 26, 1977, recognising them as Caymanian by birth. Officials said the move will remove the need for more than 2,600 individuals to apply to have their status confirmed.

The revised fee structure for work permit applications is expected to take effect alongside the new system.

In the meantime, authorities said existing application channels will remain in place, with employers and applicants advised to continue using current processes until the changes come into force.
