A 7-year-old child has died following an incident involving a jet ski at Pigeon Point Heritage Park in Tobago.

The Division of Tourism, Antiquities and Creative Industries the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) said the incident occurred around 4:43 p.m. on April 8 along the shoreline at the easternmost section of the park, within the designated marine area.

According to the division, lifeguards on duty, along with an off-duty nurse at the scene, immediately began emergency response efforts. First aid was administered before emergency services, including police and ambulance personnel, arrived.

A family of four, including the child, sustained injuries and were taken for medical treatment. 

The child later succumbed to those injuries.

Preliminary reports indicate that the operator of the jet ski involved fled the scene. 

The matter is under active investigation.

Authorities said the incident occurred within a marine park zone where restrictions on watercraft activity are in place. 

Officials noted that a recent advisory had reinforced regulations governing the use of the Buccoo Reef Marine Park, including strict limits on unauthorised jet ski operations.

In response, both Pigeon Point Heritage Park and Buccoo Reef Marine Park will be closed on April 9 to facilitate investigations, conduct safety assessments and review operational controls. The closure will include the suspension of tours, reef boat operations and bathing activities.

Authorities have condemned unsafe and unauthorised use of watercraft in protected areas and are urging the public to follow established safety guidelines and report any dangerous marine activity.

The THA also extended condolences to the child’s family.
