Search efforts for a missing man in Saba have shifted from rescue to recovery, authorities confirmed, as crews continue to comb rugged terrain and coastal areas following days of intensive operations.
Island Governor Jonathan Johnson said in a video statement on May 16 that it had been 72 hours since Erik Matthijssen was last seen near Wells Bay.
“Since the evening of May 13, several search teams have been deployed trying to locate him,” Johnson said.
The search effort has involved a wide range of local and international resources, including experienced hikers, drones, helicopters, Coast Guard vessels, marines and a Dash patrol aircraft.
Despite the масштаб of the operation, Johnson said all efforts so far have been unsuccessful.
“Based on medical advice… the nature of our search has turned from rescue to recovery,” he said.
Additional support is expected in the coming days, including specially trained search dogs from urban search and rescue teams.
Johnson acknowledged the emotional toll of the development, describing it as a moment of “defeat” for the island community.
“Our hearts go out to Mr Matthijssen’s family, his friends and his colleagues during this extremely difficult time,” he said.
He also thanked the various agencies and volunteers involved in the operation, including the police and fire departments, the Dutch Caribbean Coast Guard, marines, and crisis response teams.
Authorities have not released further details on the circumstances surrounding Matthijssen’s disappearance. The search is expected to continue as recovery efforts intensify.
