The Antigua and Barbuda government has approved plans to establish a dedicated Night Court to deal exclusively with traffic offences.

The court was approved by Cabinet following a recommendation from Attorney General and Minister for Legal Affairs Sir Steadroy Benjamin.

According to a statement from the cabinet, the move comes amid rising concerns about the number of traffic offences and road traffic accidents being recorded across the country, as well as the increasing volume of traffic-related matters awaiting resolution before the courts.

Cabinet members expressed concern about the impact reckless and unlawful driving continues to have on public safety and property, arguing that a more focused approach is needed to ensure offenders are dealt with more quickly.

Officials believe the initiative will not only improve the enforcement of traffic laws but also reduce pressure on the regular court system by freeing up judicial resources for other criminal and civil matters.

The government said the measure forms part of wider efforts to improve road safety and encourage greater compliance with traffic laws.

Cabinet highlighted that reducing road accidents and protecting lives and property remain national priorities, adding that motorists and other road users have a responsibility to help foster a culture of safer driving.
