A subsidiary of Trinidad and Tobago fuel retailer UNIPET has received provisional approval from the Central Bank to issue electronic money in the country.
The Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago (CBTT) announced that it has granted Convenience Pay Technologies Limited a provisional registration to issue electronic money, or e-money, for an initial six-month period beginning June 3, 2026.
E-money refers to monetary value stored electronically on devices such as mobile phones and can be used to make payments to merchants, businesses and individuals. Digital wallets can also enable users to make transactions even if they do not maintain a traditional bank account.
Under the terms of the approval, Convenience Pay will be permitted to onboard customers and test its services in a controlled environment under the supervision of the Central Bank.
“Under the terms of the provisional registration, Convenience Pay is allowed to enlist new customers in a controlled environment monitored by the Central Bank,” the regulator said in a statement.
Convenience Pay is a subsidiary of United Independent Petroleum Marketing Company Limited (UNIPET), one of Trinidad and Tobago’s largest operators of service stations. The company was incorporated in June 2022 and was established to provide technology solutions in both the fintech and non-fintech sectors.
According to the Central Bank, the company plans to offer a digital wallet platform that will allow users to conduct a range of electronic transactions from their smartphones and other devices. These services are expected to include transferring funds from bank accounts to digital wallets, peer-to-peer money transfers and payments to businesses.
With the provisional registration, Convenience Pay joins a growing list of companies approved to offer e-money services in Trinidad and Tobago. These include PayWise, Pesh Money Limited, PAYPR, operated by Telecommunications Services of Trinidad and Tobago Limited (TSTT), Massy Remittance Services Limited and WamNow Technologies Limited.
