The Dominica Labour Party (DLP) has chosen businesswoman and educator Ashma McDougall as its candidate for the upcoming Roseau North by-election, following the resignation of former MP Miriam Blanchard.

The party said McDougall was unanimously approved by the party’s National Executive Committee on Monday night after receiving an unopposed nomination from the Roseau North Constituency Association.

Blanchard stepped down from the seat recently, citing health reasons, bringing an end to her time as the parliamentary representative for the constituency.

The DLP thanked her for her years of service and said it continues to support her as she focuses on her recovery.

A daughter of Roseau North, McDougall was born in Bath Estate and lives in Goodwill. She said she was grateful for the opportunity and pledged to work closely with residents if elected.

“I am humbled and honoured by the vote of confidence reposed in me by the Dominica Labour Party, the Roseau North Constituency Association and the many constituents who have encouraged me to step forward at this important time,” McDougall said.

She added that her focus would be on listening to residents and working to create opportunities within the constituency.

“Roseau North is a constituency rich in talent, resilience and potential. I am committed to listening, learning and working alongside the people of the constituency to help create opportunities, strengthen communities and deliver meaningful results,” she said.

McDougall brings experience in business, economics and youth development.

She previously served as President of the National Youth Council of Dominica and as Executive Director of the Dominica Association of Industry and Commerce.

Prime Minister and DLP leader Roosevelt Skerrit welcomed her selection, saying the party was pleased to put forward a candidate with a background in development and community work.

“Ashma’s candidacy reflects the Dominica Labour Party’s continued commitment to attracting capable, energetic and forward-thinking individuals who are prepared to contribute to the country’s development and improve the lives of its citizens,” Skerrit said.

The Roseau North by-election is constitutionally due to take place in the coming weeks. Skerrit said details of the party’s campaign will be announced soon.
