Apple Syder Ferry sink

A ferry operating between St Kitts and Nevis sank on June 29, after encountering difficulties shortly after departing, but all passengers and crew members were safely rescued.

The vessel, the Apple Syder, operated by the Apple Syder Ferry Company, reportedly experienced problems just minutes into the journey.

Reports indicate that approximately 47 passengers and crew were aboard at the time of the incident.

The St Kitts and Nevis Coast Guard, along with the Makana Ferry Service, responded to the emergency and assisted those onboard.

Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew said all passengers and crew were safe following the incident.

He visited the hospital to receive an update on the condition of those affected and remained in contact with emergency officials as the rescue operation unfolded.

Drew praised the efforts of the Coast Guard, the St Kitts and Nevis Defence Force, police, emergency medical personnel, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), hospital staff and civilians who assisted during the response.

“Above all, we give thanks to Almighty God for His grace and protection over everyone on board,” the Prime Minister said.

The Makana Ferry Service also commended the response efforts, thanking its crew and passengers for their cooperation during the rescue operation.

“At sea, we are one community, and helping one another in times of need is what seafarers do,” the company said.

Former St Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister and current Foreign Minister Dr Denzil Douglas expressed relief that the incident ended without loss of life, while reflecting on the country’s maritime history.

“As we reflect on today’s frightening incident, memories of the ill-fated MV Christena inevitably come to mind. May we never forget that tragedy, even as we remain thankful that this situation ended without the loss of life,” Douglas said.

He also praised the swift response of the Coast Guard, fishermen and others involved in helping those aboard.
