Apple Syder Ferry sink

An investigation is underway to determine what caused the MV Apple Syder ferry to sink in the Basseterre Roadstead on June 29, authorities in St Kitts and Nevis have confirmed.

The St Christopher Air and Sea Ports Authority (SCASPA) said the vessel has since been secured at the Ferry Terminal as the probe continues.

“SCASPA remains committed to supporting the ongoing investigation and will provide further updates as information becomes available,” the authority said.

Forty-one passengers and six crew members were aboard the ferry when it went down.

All 47 people were safely accounted for following a coordinated response from emergency agencies and nearby vessels.

SCASPA expressed gratitude to the Coast Guard Unit of the St Kitts-Nevis Defence Force, the St Kitts and Nevis Fire and Rescue Services, the Royal St Christopher and Nevis Police Force and its specialised units, the Department of Maritime Affairs, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Ministries of National Security, Health and Social Development, as well as the counsellor who provided support at the scene.

The authority also recognised the crew of the Makana Ferry for their assistance during the rescue operation.
