A police officer in Trinidad and Tobago was shot and killed during an attempted robbery late Tuesday.

The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) said PC Romell Kerry Douglas, 48, was sitting in his vehicle in Kelly Village, central Trinidad, at around 11:05 pm when a white Nissan Tiida pulled up alongside him.

Police believe the occupants of the vehicle attempted to rob Douglas, prompting an exchange of gunfire.

Investigators said the officer’s licensed firearm was taken during the incident.

First responders found Douglas with multiple gunshot wounds at around 11:15 pm.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

One of the suspected attackers, identified by police as 19-year-old Adetola Ammon of Arima, was taken to the Arima Health Facility with gunshot wounds but later died.

Police have launched a coordinated manhunt for two other male suspects believed to have been in the Nissan Tiida.

The vehicle has since been recovered.

In a statement, Commissioner of Police Allister Guevarro and the executive of the TTPS extended condolences to Douglas’ family, friends and colleagues.

The investigation is ongoing.
