Only part of the prosecution’s evidence was disclosed on Monday when the three men charged in connection with the deaths of more than 70 people in the MV Barima tragedy appeared before the Charity Magistrate’s Court in Guyana.
Captain Kevin Price, Chief Mate Rondell Dwayne Roberts and Goods Superintendent Delon Granderson appeared virtually and in handcuffs for the hearing, their second court appearance since being charged.
Prosecutors handed over a portion of the evidence, including witness statements and other documents. However, full disclosure was not completed.
The case was adjourned until September 7, when the prosecution is expected to provide the remainder of its evidence.
The three men face murder charges following the July 18 capsizing of the MV Barima, one of Guyana’s deadliest maritime disasters.
Authorities have recovered the bodies of 73 victims, while about 30 others remain missing.
Seventy-six people survived the tragedy.
A day after the vessel sank, Prime Minister Mark Phillips revealed that two crew members, including the captain, had tested positive for narcotics.
The Guyana government has since established a Commission of Inquiry to investigate the circumstances surrounding the disaster.
