Caribbean athletes are leaving the just-concluded World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Oregon, USA, with a combined 11 medals, with athletes from several countries making their mark at the global junior championships.

This year’s medal haul is notable for the spread of countries contributing to the Caribbean’s overall tally, with Jamaica leading the way with eight medals, including two gold.

Jamaica’s Michael-Andew Edwards won gold in the men’s triple jump, while the quartet of Sashana Johnson, Theianna-Lee Terrelonge, Natrece East and Shanoya Mikalia Douglas won the women’s 4x100m relay.

The Jamaican team clocked a new World U20 leading time of 42.89 seconds to claim the gold.

Douglas also leaves Oregon with two individual silver medals after finishing second in both the women’s 100m and 200m.

The Jamaican’s were fourth on the medal table and third on points.

Dominica also celebrated a historic achievement, with Addison James winning bronze in the javelin to give the country its first-ever medal at the World Athletics U20 Championships.

Guyana added another milestone, with Tianna Springer winning bronze in the women’s 400m to claim the country’s second-ever medal at the championships.

Barbados also got on the medal table, with Jayden Green securing bronze in the men’s 200m.

Outside of the medalist, there were some other noteworthy performances by the region’s athletes.

St Lucia’s Jady Emmanuel made the finals in the women’s 100m, placing eight.

She set a new personal best on her way to the finals.

Trinidad and Tobago’s Makaelan Woods placed fourth in the men’s 200m narrowly missing out on a medal.
