Juan Carlos Alvarez

The World Bank Group has appointed Juan Carlos Alvarez as its new Country Manager for Trinidad and Tobago, bringing together the institution’s country-level leadership as it seeks to strengthen its development support for the country.

Alvarez will lead the World Bank Group’s engagement with Trinidad and Tobago across three institutions — the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA).

In the role, he will focus on developing a more integrated approach to mobilising financing, knowledge and private investment in support of job creation and Trinidad and Tobago’s public and private sector priorities.

Alvarez most recently served as World Bank Country Manager for Angola and São Tomé and Príncipe, where he led the institution’s engagement with both countries.

He joined the World Bank Group in 2000 and has worked as Legal Counsel across several regions, including Latin America and the Caribbean and South Asia. His work included advising Country Management Units on legal, operational and policy matters.

Alvarez holds a Juris Doctor from the Universidad Autónoma de Centro América in Costa Rica and a Master of Laws in International Law from the Washington College of Law at American University in Washington, D.C.
