The remnants of Tropical Storm Dolly are moving towards the Leeward Islands and could bring heavy rain and gusty winds to parts of the Caribbean over the next few days.

The system is currently about 300 miles east of the Leeward Islands, but the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said there are no signs of a closed circulation developing.

Dolly is expected to continue moving westward to west-northwestward at about 25 mph, making redevelopment into a tropical cyclone unlikely.

The NHC gives the system almost no chance of developing over the next 48 hours and only a 10 per cent chance over the next seven days.

Even without further development, the remnants could produce locally heavy rainfall and gusty winds across parts of the Leeward Islands, the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

Elsewhere, a separate area of low pressure is being monitored in the Gulf of America, about 125 miles south of Pensacola, Florida.

The system has become slightly better organised since Thursday, and some slow development is possible over the next few days as it drifts westward.

The NHC puts its chance of developing into a tropical cyclone at near zero over the next 48 hours and 20 per cent over the next seven days.
