SCARBOROUGH, Tobago — A 42-year-old police corporal has been charged with assault by beating following an alleged incident involving a 26-year-old woman in Tobago.

Acting Corporal Sheldon Baker, who is attached to the Shirvan Road Police Station, appeared before Magistrate Lawson in the Second Magistrates’ District Court on Monday, September 21, 2026.

The matter was adjourned to December 4.

Baker was arrested on Sunday, September 20, after a warrant for his arrest was executed at the Scarborough Police Station. He had been granted bail in the sum of $10,000 by Justice of the Peace Ronnie Spence and appeared in court the following day.

Police said the charge arose from an incident which allegedly occurred around 6:30 pm on April 12, 2026, at Golden Grove Road, Canaan, Tobago.

According to police, Baker allegedly went to the woman’s residence, where an argument ensued.

During the incident, he allegedly struck the woman several times about the head.

The incident was reportedly witnessed by a 12-year-old girl, while CCTV footage from the area also captured the incident.

Following consultations with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions on August 18 and September 3, advice was received on September 10 to charge Baker with assault by beating.

A warrant for his arrest was subsequently obtained on September 18 and executed.
