A Trinidad and Tobago police officer has been granted TT$350,000 bail after appearing before the High Court on a charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm in connection with the shooting of a man in Tobago last month.
Police Constable Kernel Dates, 44, appeared before Master Shah in the Scarborough High Court on Monday, where he was formally charged with the offence.
As part of his bail conditions, Dates was ordered to report to the Roxborough Police Station twice a week, reside at a Pembroke address and remain at least 200 feet away from the complainant. The matter was adjourned to November 3, 2026.
The charge stems from an incident on June 8 at Blood Bay, Tobago.
Investigators said the complainant was walking along the roadway when he was approached by a man known to him who was allegedly armed with a firearm.
The man told investigators he was struck several times on the upper body with the assailant’s hands and the weapon. He allegedly picked up a piece of bamboo in an attempt to defend himself, at which point the firearm was pointed in his direction and he was shot in the abdomen.
The injured man was taken to hospital for treatment.
The case is expected to return before the court in November.
