THE BOTTOM, Saba — ING will open a physical branch on Saba on November 26, as RBC plans to exit the market in January 2027.
The announcement was welcomed by the Public Entity Saba, which has spent several years advocating for improved access to banking services and raising concerns with the Dutch Government, De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) and other stakeholders.
In a statement from the Public Entity on November 4, Commissioner of Finance Bruce Zagers said the decision followed considerable effort and cooperation, and would help address the island’s long-standing need for accessible banking services.
“This is very welcome news for Saba. For many years, we have continued to advocate for better access to banking services, recognizing how important these services are to our residents, businesses and the local economy,” Zagers said.
He thanked the Dutch Government and DNB for their support throughout the process, and welcomed ING’s decision to establish a physical presence on the island.
Zagers said ING’s arrival would provide reassurance, although several concerns surrounding access to cash remain unresolved.
These include the availability of change for businesses and the ability of residents and companies to make cash deposits.
Two additional ATMs for cash withdrawals will be installed in Windwardside and The Bottom in the coming weeks, adding to existing machines at the harbour and airport.
The initiative, being carried out with DNB and Brink’s, will also introduce B-boxes to allow businesses to make cash deposits.
The Public Entity said it would continue working with ING to ensure a smooth transition, with particular attention to pensioners and others who may need help changing banks or using digital banking services.
While welcoming the announcement, Zagers said further work was needed to address the island’s cash-access concerns and ensure residents were supported through the transition.
