A 30-year-old man has drowned after going missing while swimming at Herbert Beach in Nevis January 2, police said.

The Royal St Christopher and Nevis Police Force reported that Jahi Henry of Webb’s Ground was in the water, with a friend between 1 pm and 1:30 pm when he got into diffculty. 

Police said Henry’s friend tried to help him but were unsuccessful.

The friend later contacted police who requested assistance from the St Kitts and Nevis Defence Force Coast Guard, as well as local divers, fishermen and other responders. 

Shortly before 3 pm, Henry was found unresponsive offshore in the vicinity of the Medical University of the Americas by Coast Guard officers.

Resuscitation attempts by Coast Guard officers and Emergency Medical Services personnel were unsuccessful. 

Henry was later pronounced dead at the Alexandra Hospital. 

Police said an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death, and investigations into the incident are ongoing.
