Arrest

Two Americans have been arrested in separate incidents after allegedly attempting to traffic drugs into the Dominican Republic.

The National Directorate of Drug Control (DNCD) reported that the first American, who arrived on a flight from New Jersey, was arrested on January 4 at the Gregorio Luperón Airport in Puerto Plata after an X-ray of his luggage returned images that aroused the suspicion of anti-narcotics agents.

A search of his bags revealed 17 packages of marijuana, 29 vape devices filled with liquid cannabis, a large quantity of tobacco, 90 sachets of stimulants, and three cell phones, among other items of evidence.

Three days later, at the same airport, a 36-year-old American man was arrested upon arrival after his luggage also returned suspicious images during an X-ray screening.

Agents discovered seven packages of marijuana, boxes of wrapping paper, cigarettes, and a marijuana grinder. Cash and four cell phones were also seized.

The DNCD has not provided any further updates on the cases.
