The Ministry of Health in Anguilla has issued a public advisory following an increase in influenza like illness, particularly among school aged children.

According to the latest surveillance data, there has been an increase of seven school aged cases compared with the previous week.

The ministry also noted that it has received informal reports of rising absenteeism in schools due to students experiencing flu like symptoms.

The ministry stated that common symptoms of the illness include fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, headache, body aches, and fatigue. In some cases, especially among children, vomiting or diarrhoea may also occur.

To limit the spread of the virus, health officials are urging the public to stay home when sick and avoid schools, workplaces, and social gatherings.

Protective measures such as covering coughs and sneezes, frequent hand washing with soap and water, and the use of hand sanitiser are also recommended.

The ministry further advised that frequently touched surfaces such as phones, doorknobs, and desks should be cleaned and disinfected regularly.

Parents and caregivers have been told to seek medical attention if a child experiences difficulty breathing, persistent high fever lasting more than three days, severe weakness, or signs of dehydration.

Individuals at a higher risk of complications, including infants, older adults, pregnant women, and those with underlying conditions like asthma, diabetes, or heart disease, are encouraged to contact a healthcare provider early if symptoms develop.

The ministry confirmed it will continue to monitor these trends and provide updates as necessary.
