Two men, including a police constable assigned to the Westmoreland Division in Jamaica, are in custody following a series of coordinated, intelligence-driven operations carried out across Hanover and Westmoreland on January 30.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) said joint operations were led by the Counter-Terrorism and Organised Crime Branch, working in collaboration with the Firearms and Narcotics Investigation Division, and formed part of ongoing efforts to disrupt the illegal trafficking of ammunition in Area 1.

During the operations, investigators seized 85 assorted rounds of ammunition, along with a motor vehicle, several mobile phones and a quantity of cash.

Police said that at one location in Hanover, two men were apprehended during an operation targeting the illegal sale of ammunition. 

A search of a motor vehicle occupied by both men reportedly led to the discovery of ammunition. Further intelligence-led follow-up actions resulted in the recovery of additional rounds at a residential address in Westmoreland.

A 31-year-old police constable and a 39-year-old civilian man were taken into custody in connection with the investigation. 

Both are being detained on reasonable suspicion of breaches of the Firearms (Prohibition, Restriction and Regulation) Act, 2022.

All items seized during the operations have been secured and handed over to the relevant investigative units for further examination.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force said it maintains a zero-tolerance stance on criminal activity, particularly where members of the organisation are involved, and reaffirmed its commitment to integrity, accountability and public trust.

Investigations are continuing and further updates are expected.
